Last year we were all impressed with the paintings Diane did for her yard. She will be teaching a Gnome Home door stopper at our next meeting. She has done a lot of the prep work for you already by just washing all those rocks. It sounds like fun and something we have not done before, so, get your OLD brushes , yep, your OLD brushes ready and let's have some fun. I am enclosing what Diane has requested you bring to the meeting.

Rock painting Feb 4- cost $3.00- includes rock and wood filler.

I purchased and washed 20 rocks. So your future gnome home door stop or garden decoration is ready for you to create.

Supplies needed:

Acrylic paints and painting supplies

Hair dryer

Lead pencil

Your imagination

You will be painting on rock so if your brushes are expensive, I recommend picking up an inexpensive craft set of brushes that contains various sizes.

I don't have a picture to show you because you will each use the colors you prefer and your creative imagination - don't panic, I know you can do it and there will be someone there to help you.

We will meet at Jane's church again. We are so appreciative that Jane was able to get this room for us. But there are some things we will need to go over with everyone at the next meeting - some dos and don'ts. Til then, enjoy the weather while we can.

I hate that I had to miss the first meeting of the year but sometimes the hubby has to come first. Who would have thought a man of his age would have to undergo an emergency exploratory appendectomy?? At any rate he is recovering well. But I have to tell you, I am not cut out for this housewife stuff. I have cleaned, cooked, washed dishes, washed HIS clothes, vacuumed, dusted, put out trash - and it goes on and on!! That is just too much for one person! I even have had to go out in the cold and get the paper in the morning - all joking aside, you never know how much someone does for you until you have to do it yourself. Thank you to all who inquired about him - we really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

I see by the minutes you had a very productive meeting. I am so happy Diane agreed to do the treasury for us. I think a lot of the board members just need a break for a while. Now that we are into the new year, Jane F., is already busy lining up artists to teach a seminar. And we still have lots more to do, one of which will be our charity for this year. I think you will like what we are suggesting. We have been talking about other things to do as a chapter so stay tuned, if all goes well we will have a great year.

As requested, I will start putting together the newsletter again. It is important that you make sure Sue has your correct address. I have not had time to find a program that will work with my computer but I will be looking this week. I hope that as a member you will send me articles, quotes, poems, recipes, etc., so the newsletter will be interesting. I don't think you want to hear only me and my ramblings so I will have to rely on all of you to help out.

A new year - can you believe it?? The older I get the faster the time flies. I so enjoyed having y'all at the house this Christmas. I hope everyone was pleased with their ornaments and gifts. I was. My ornaments went directly on the tree - we had some really unique ones this time. And my little snow lady joined the cast of others - we now have four. As soon as I get the pics from Crystal I will post them online.

This Saturday we will have our meeting at Jane's church starting at 10 am. We are planning to paint the little ornament that Sandy brought, the penguin on a cinnamon stick. And of course we will have a covered dish lunch. I will update the blog on Friday, as soon as I know what you will need to bring. In the meantime, get together your paints, water container, blow dryer, brushes, etc. If you have cinnamon sticks, bring those too, you may want to paint multiples.

I have also included the minutes as listed above. Since Jackie is going to be unavailable to continue as President this year, I am happy to accept your nomination. I will do my best to keep our club going and try to make it as interesting as possible. Jane Fulford has accepted the position as Education Chair. Welcome aboard, Jane. We were blessed for many years to have Linda as Education Chair. This gives her a much needed break. She is the grandmother to several grandchildren, one having just been born. Having four grandchildren, I know you want to spend as much time as possible with them and I hope Linda is having a ball doing just that. Congrats Linda on the birth of the latest grand baby.

Our Annual Member Only Christmas Party

Can you believe it is that time of year already? It seems like it was just a short time ago that we were together celebrating the holidays. I think most of you know what we do but just in case - we play Dirty Santa and if you want to participate, bring a gift to exchange valued at least $15.00. Then for the ornament exchange, bring up to five ornaments (hand made preferably) to exchange with other members. Bring a dish for the food table - the club furnishes the meat (it might be beef, pork tenderloin or ham) and the drinks. Be here at 5:30, park along the front of the yard and in the driveway. It is always fun to get together so make your plans now. If you do not know the way to my house I have attached a map. I would really like to know who will be attending so if you would, please email me and let me know if you will be coming - I like to have chairs for everyone. Saturday Paint In

I am having a bad time with my printer but I wanted to give you an idea what we will attempt to paint on Saturday. This Santa (minus the little elf on the ornament) can be painted surface of your choice. I will provide the paints, come prepared to paint quickly as we will not have the room all day. I plan to eliminate some of the detail work but this is the basic design. You will need a 1/2" flat or angle brush, a liner and a small filbert or flat and a rake brush. Then of course your regular painting supplies. If you have a hair dryer that would be helpful. Hope you like it. I am painting mine on an old silver tray - about 13" in diameter. I washed the silver tray with vinegar, sprayed a primer on it and then it is ready to paint. Call me if you have any questions just try to keep the surface you are painting on no bigger than 11"X14". I received a call from Lucy Sunday that Debbie Hughes died Sunday morning. Debbie has been with the Sea Oats for at least 20 years. She loved painting and always called everyone sweetheart. She always brought her mother with her to every class and came as often as she could. She will be missed.

For Saturday's class, bring a surface (preferably not canvas but if you do bring a canvas we will work with it) not to exceed 11" x 14". The Santa is really cute but may be time consuming to paint. I will bring several different sizes of patterns to choose from. I will also post his picture on the blog before Saturday - I just have to finish it. There has been a lot going on in my family so I haven't had a lot of time to complete it. Will post later this week. This is a membership appreciation class so there will be no charge. I plan to even send you the pattern and the photo to print out at home. It will be fun, I promise. See you then.

I remember sitting at the counter back in my skinnier days (early teens). They had the best burgers in town and served them with a 6 ounce bottle of coke - and then a few peanuts to drop in your coke to watch it fizz. I found this picture recently and it brought back such sweet memories I just had to share with you. If you remember you are probably smiling right now.

November Paint In

Our meeting is coming up soon and I have a few items I thought you would be interested in, especially our newer painters. Margaret has been generous enough to add a few painting pointers to our blog - so be on the look out as she (and others are invited to join in) shares her painting knowledge. We can all benefit from the many years we have accumulated tips and techniques - we never stop learning in our painting world. So for now I will add it to this post but in the future you will see it listed under tips and techniques. I just have to figure out how to set up the page.

I will be teaching another Santa in November. I will post a picture this weekend so you will have a whole week to find something to paint on. Then the first Satruday in December I will host our annual member Christmas Party at my house. I always love having everyone over where we can eat, drink (non-alcoholic) and open presents. So much fun. But now I have to get with my sister because she borrowed my reindeer I got last year and has yet to return it!!

Francis is teaching an ornament class

Here are the pictures of the project Francis will be teaching. She will teach the small candle box. The cost will be $3.00 for the small box. She will have the large ones available for purchase also for $5.00 each. She will provide the paints and supplies. There will be no class fee as this is a continuation of the ornament class. Lots of fun so plan to be there at 10 am.

Actually, it is Margaret who is having a sale. She will be destashing her painting room and will bring what she no longer wants to the next meeting. She will have items from $1.00 to $20.00 so bring your cash (keep it to single bills please) because you know you are going to find something you would love to paint on.
She will have a wood muffin stand with 3 shelves for $25, 2 large wood sleds $10 each, a long wall cabinet for $20, 2 wood buckets $10each and much more. Most items will be under $5.00.

I know, you are wondering what I am talking about right? Well, we have lost our meeting place effective 1 January 2012. It seems the power that be at Baptist Medical Hospital have decided to limit the use of the Azalea Room to health related meetings only. It was nothing that we did wrong - but the hospital is undergoing renovations (we've heard this before) and will do their training at the Medical Park. I have checked with West Florida Rehab and they said "NO". So, we need to find a new place and that is where you all come in - help us find a place to meet and paint. This will be our main topic of discussion at the next meeting. Put your think caps on and come with some new ideas for the clubs. See you on 1 October where Francis will paint the match boxex she brought last month.

Painting Ornaments in August

Ready to paint ornaments again? This week we will be painting the snowman on the left (taught by me) and Linda will teach a decoupage ornament. Just bring your regular painting supplies (you will need a small scruffy brush), and pot luck to share with the group and be prepared to paint from 10 am - 3 pm. Possibly even longer. We will try to squeeze in three projects. Lucy was planning to teach this month but she has been quite ill and will not be able to make it. I know everyone had a good time last month painting with Margaret and making that cute angel with Crystal. Thank you to both for volunteering your time to teach. We all appreciate it so much. Just as a reminder, please bring smaller bills than a twenty - the projects cost $1.00- $2.00 most of the time and the teachers do not carry a lot of change on them - so please, bring one dollar bills. Well, I bet you are all sweltering in this heat. If it helps you can think about the Christmas ornaments we will be painting this weekend. We have several people lined up to teach a class so be there at 10 am so we can have a short meeting and get to painting. Margaret will start with this cute ping pong ball snowman. I will teach - something - haven't figured it out yet. Nothing like waiting til the last minute.

I hate that I missed the seminar with Nilda last month. I heard she was excellent. I am including a few pics that Barbara took.

I know all of you had a great time this weekend painting (or coloring???) with Nilda this weekend. Pencils seem to be the most popular thing to do now. I look forward to the photos that I am sure Barbara took. I received an email from Margaret who spoke with Sherry Nelson recently. Sherry lives in the hills in Arizona which have had some major wild fires lately. Sherry's home has escaped the fire and all is well. This is the website you can check - http://www.inciweb.org/

June Meeting and Paint In

Our next meeting will be June 4th at 10 am. Sherry will be teaching that fabulous clock ornament she had at the Christmas party and every one fell in love with. You will need to bring your regular acrylic painting supplies and the following:

Brushes:

# 2 and # 8 Shader #10/0 long liner #5 Angle Stippler Medium Crescent Stencil Brush

· Snowflake stencil or stamp ....if you don't have this, I will have mine for you to use.

· Compass

· Miscellaneous: Matte varnish of choice…Pencil…Ruler…Stylus…Tracing paper…Transfer paper and usual acrylic painting supplies.

I will supply the paint, glamour dust, stretchy tape, etc.

Cost will be $15 each member. This will cover the cost of the clock parts, disc, the shared paint, glamour dust, and stretchy tape.

If you plan to attend the Nilda Rodriquez seminar on June 25-26, you will need to sign up at the meeting. She will be teaching the following projects in color pencils and mixed media:

Linda will be at the meeting with the sign up sheet. You all had so much fun at the Pat Lentine seminar and this one looks to be just as nice. Of course, we will have a pot luck lunch and afterwards, the members will take Nilda to dinner, everyone is invited.

Our May meeting will be held 7 May at 10 am. Our President will be teaching a class on pansies. She will provide the material, just bring your regular painting supplies. The class will be in acrylic and will cost $5. She is only charging the cost of copies, surface, and the use of paints so this is a good deal. Don't forget to bring a dish for Pot Luck Lunch. I won't make this long - don't have a lot to say so I will enclose a photo and will see you Saturday.

I know that everyone had a great time painting with pencils with Pat Lentine this month. Wasn't it fun and very interesting. Who would have thought you could layer one color over another to achieve such pretty paintings? If you enjoyed the class be sure to sign up for the Nilda Rodriquez pencil seminar in June. Linda will have the project pictures at the next meeting so you still have time to sign up.

Thanks to all who stayed and helped clean up the room after the seminar. Barbara, our Chapter Historian, took a few pictures of the classes for you to enjoy. As I told you earlier, I have been unable to retrieve my email from Outlook Express since my computer crashed. My new Windows 7 does not allow access to Outlook Express - so please help by emailing this update to any member you may have an email address to. My computer has died - and it was so young. I purchased it only two years ago - a Hewlett Packard. Needless to say, I am very sad because I have my entire list of email contacts and all the important emails saved in folders which I no longer have access to. I have purchased a new Dell but the Windows 7 does not have Outlook Express any longer and that was my primary email. So, I cannot access the converted list of pencils or the pictures for this weekend's class. I hope everyone received their list prior to the computer's demise. This weekend we will host Pat Lentine. The class will start at 9 am, please remember to bring a dish for lunch. I was able to find all the pencils for the class and the paper. The best place to purchase these items was at Lenox Bookstore across from Pensacola State College. They had everything I needed and their prices were actually better than Michael's or Hobby Lobby. If you have any questions about the class, contact Linda. I cannot forward the blog to anyone until I figure out how to get my contact list. In the meantime I hope if you are reading this you will forward to anyone in the club that you have an email address with. See you tomorrow,

March is here already

Can you believe it??? We are already about to have our third meeting of the year. As I said in my last post we have a few things to iron out but it won't take long. And we need to discuss what the club's plans are for this year - then we can eat and have Janice teach her Dishcloth Angel. For the angel you will need:

a dish towel
a dish cloth or wash cloth
and a pot holder (square or rectangle)
five feet of coordinating ribbon (or just bring in your spool of ribbon)
and you may want to throw in a pair of scissors.

Class fee will be $8 with $3 going back to the club treasury.

These make the cutest gifts or to tie to the top of a package for a bridal shower. Something nice and easy to do and I know you will enjoy it.

In case you didn't get the email, the Decorative Painter will be mailed out the week of 7 March but if you can't wait you can check it out on line. They have some pretty projects in it this month.
Enterprise Wiregrass Decorative Painters (click on their name to go to their website) will host Brenda Harris the month of June I believe. Check out their website at http://www.wiregrassdecorativepainters.org/. I don't believe they have made their project selection as of yet. Several of us have attended classes in Enterprise and they are a great group of ladies. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to stay at the military base (the civilians have taken over the temporary housing and raised the rates from $27 to $72 a night). So we now have to get rooms at a nearby hotel. Still we have a lot of fun together.

I apologize for getting this out so late but it has been a busy week - my teeth have been cleaned, my eyes have been prodded, my veins have been drained, the twins have been squeezed flat, and my little nephew has had surgery to replace a shunt in his brain (fourth time) - but I will be at the meeting Saturday. Hope to see yall there.

Happy Valentine's Day

Hope you all have a wonderful Valentine Day. Our meeting last week was interesting. Our new board has some work to do. Thank you Margaret, for teaching the Long Leg Chickens. It was a lot of fun. It is great to be able to paint something without a lot of stress involved. Next month Janice will teach the Dishcloth Angel. I will add more info once I have spoken with her. By now, you should have received an email with the attached list of pencils Pat Lentine will be using in her seminar class scheduled in April.

As a reminder to members, please read the booklet-directory you receive when you become a member of the club. It is the same one we update every year with new members home address and phone numbers. When we vote to have a certain teacher come in for a seminar Linda will request photos of the subjects she is willing to teach. When the teacher sends the photos Linda will put them out for the members to vote on. If you vote on a project you are saying that if that project receives the most votes and is selected, you will take that class. It is the only way the club can be assured we will have enough students to justify paying the teacher to come. If you decide you can not take the class for whatever reason - once you have voted and signed your name to that class you are responsible for paying for that class. However, it is your class and your right to sell it to another painter. If you voted for a project and it was not selected, you are not responsible for paying the seminar fee. Jackie has asked for a board meeting this month and there will be a discussion on this at the next meeting I am sure, so be prepared to voice your concerns at that time.

What has happened in the past is over and done with - let's look forward to a future of lots of painting and good times. In the meantime, have a wonderful Valentine's Day with the ones you love.

I know all of you enjoyed Margaret's tips and techniques last month. Sorry I was unable to attend. I have a bug that just won't let go even when I think it is over it snaps right back to me. At any rate, other than a sore throat I am better and I hate that I missed the meeting.

To start off this new year Margaret has offered to teach the Long Legged Chicken Tote at the next meeting. She has found tote bags that are approximately 8 1/2" x 11" for you to paint on. This looks like a fun class so come prepared. You will need to bring the following:

A piece of cardboard to support the tote while painting (about 8 1/2" x 11")

Ultra Fine Sharpie Pen to outline the design

Grey graphite or use the General's Carcoal - 557-HB hard we used in Linda Sellars class

Your regular painting supplies - brushes, water container, tracing paper, palette, etc.

Paints and the tote will be supplied by the teacher. (Tote in picture does not represent the actual size of the tote.)

Cost: $15 per student

Lunch will be pot luck.

Remember the meeting starts at 10 am - PLEASE be on time so we can have a short meeting and get to painting. Also, check the sidebars to see the dates for the meetings this year along with who will be teaching.

Happy New Year to you all!! I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I so enjoyed having everyone over for the Christmas Party. Loved it even though I couldn't get my air conditioning to work until everyone was ready to leave. But I am not complaining - compared to the weather we are having this week I will take a little warmth over the cold any time. We sure have some great cooks in our group and we are always asking for recipes. So I will add another page to our blog just for recipes. Give me a little time to get this done, I'm not as fast as I use to be.

Our Annual Christmas Party

Our Christmas Party this year will be on Saturday night at 5:30 pm on 4 December. We will meet at Brenda's house, enjoy some really great food (bring a covered dish), play Dirty Santa and exchange a few ornaments. We will have several new members attending this year so let me fill you in on how this works.

We all bring a covered dish. I will provide the meat and the drinks. If your item has to be heated be sure it is in the appropriate dish to fit in my microwave oven. We will set up the buffet table - and it always looks so nice with all the food we have. Everyone will find a place to sit, get their dish and proceed to the food line. We eat and talk, then eat and talk some more. Then it is time for the fun to start.

Ornament Exchange - bring up to five ornaments to exchange. They should be handmade/handpainted (preferably) by you or someone else. Put them in a lunch bag and do not put anyone's name on it. We place them all in the middle of the room and everyone draws a number. When it is your turn you get to pull three bags if you brought three ornaments, five bags if you brought five ornaments. This is what I look forward to every year.

Dirty Santa. Purchase a gift (at least $15) and wrap it but do not put a name on it. Everyone participating will have a number. The first person will choose a gift from all of those brought to the party. Then the second person will decide to either choose a gift or steal the first person's present. A gift can only be stolen twice before it is dead. Then it continues until the last gift. The person who picked the first gift then can decide to keep her gift or steal any of the other gifts. It is pretty nice to be number one!!

This is such a special time for our group, everyone is in the Christmas spirit and it is the last time we meet befor the new year. So, please, join us.

November Paint In...

Well we won't be painting this month instead we will be making paper flowers with Linda. All you have to bring is SCISSORS (a hot glue gun, a stapler, and spray bottle of water will be helpful also). Linda brought in a few paper flowers last month and there was a lot of interest in making this a class project for November. Don't forget pot luck for lunch and we will see you there.

Although I was unable to make the meeting last month I understand everyone had a great time. Linda Sellars taught fabric painting and everyone went home with snazzy new shirts. We may have to try this again sometime.

Next month will be our Annual Christmas Party. Start thinking about the ornaments you will be giving at the ornament swap - you only have 53 days til Christmas which means you only have 32 days before the party. I will post more in the next few weeks.

NWFSO Meeting 11 September

Well, all I can say is - if you didn't make it Saturday you missed out on a lot of fun. Margaret is so good about teaching and explaining the process that everyone walked away with a very pretty ornament. You see the background - bet you thought we decoupaged it on, right? We didn't. We used a stamp!! Imagine that, a stamp that could give such a pretty background to paint on. Margaret made it all seem so simple. I think we have finished painting ornaments for year, you should have some very nice ones for gift giving or for your tree this year.

And we had a big giveaway of books and some wood products. Edith Davis, a former member, was so generous in donating her Decorative Painters and books/magazines she has collected over the years. Since we had several new members and some who had lost their books either through fire or Hurricane Ivan, it was nice that they were able to pull a few books for their new collections. We can't thank Edith enough for her generosity. She even called to say she had a few more things to donate - I will bring them to the November class.

I would like to remind the members that the raffle we hold every month is a benefit to the club. However, we need donated items from you to continue. We were so lucky to have the Azalea City Chapter donate their books and tapes to us which we have been raffling off, but we will soon run out. Search your stash to find items you no longer need or want or purchase something you find at the store on sale - all items are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Next month we have invited Linda Sellers over for a weekend seminar. Linda will be painting on fabric. She will offer the Toucan and Seahorse on Saturday and the Ants and a floral on Sunday. Here are two of the items she will be teaching. As soon as I get the other pics I will post them. Don't forget next month's meeting/seminar will be on 2-3 October at 9 am. We always start painting early when we have a seminar so we can get the most painting time in. Lunch will be pot luck. If you have any questions about the seminar, please give Linda a call. I will be out of town so I will not be able to attend. I know yall are going to enjoy this class, painting fabric is much more relaxing.

We will have our monthly meeting this Saturday at 10 am. Margaret is going to teach the holly and berry ornament. If time permits we may be able to paint one more ornament or we will have a demo. Here is the recipe yall requested from Jane. It was delicious, can't wait to try it out on the family.

24 hour vegetable salad

1/4 cup Tarragon Vinegar
1/2 cup white vinegar
3/8 cup salad oil
3/4 cup sugar
1and 1/2 Tablespoon cold water
(Put in a jar and shake or stir until blended)

In a large bowl:
(You can add or delete any of these vegetables you wish)

1 no. 2 can small English peas (drain and rinse)
1 no. 2 can french style green beans (drain and rinse)
l large onion sliced in rings
l large pepper diced
several stalks of celery diced
l jar pimento drained
fresh cucumber sliced
1 can yellow wax beans (drain and rinse)
1 can red kidney beans (drain and rinse)
1 t. salt
1/2 t. pepper

Mix the vegetables and pour the vinegar mixture over them. Refrigerate. Will keep a long time

Our next meeting and Ornament Paint In will be 10 July starting at 10 am. The photos are just an sample of ornaments we will be painting. Several of our members have volunteered to teach - Brenda Cueno, Lucy Kierce, Barbara Murphy, and Crystal Brown. Bring your regular painting supplies as the teachers will supply the paints, surface, pattern, instructions, and photo. The class will last all day so don't forget your covered dish for lunch. We will have a short meeting starting promply at 10 am after which we will start painting. This is such a fun relaxing class, and we all walk away prepared for the holiday season. See you then.

June Ornament Paint In

We are hosting our annual Ornament Paint In this Saturday, 5 June, from 10 am - 5 pm. Several of our members will be teaching ornaments which will include Sue's Snowman pictured. Jane Toman will be making ornaments with charms, Margaret Lecoq will teach also, she just has to make up her mind which ornament she wants to teach. And I believe there are a couple of others teaching but I don't have their names handy. At any rate, bring your brushes (make sure to include several small ones) and regular painting supplies the teachers will provide everything else. The teachers will charge only a small fee to cover their expense, there is no charge for the class. And don't forget your covered dish. See you then.

May 1, 2010 - Meeting-Paint In

We will be painting greeting cards for our military in Iraq after tomorrow's meeting. Pat will be teaching and will bring the supplies, you just need to bring your regular painting supplies - brushes, palette, etc. We will meet at 10 am and will start painting immediately after. Don't forget to bring a dish for lunch.

We also have several items that we need to make decisions on, such as teachers for the fall and 2011. If you are planning to participate in the Craft Show this year, we will need for you to sign up. We also will discuss the Raffle, whether we plan to paint the Nativity Scene. At this point we will need someone to cut out the wood pieces. And the final thing will be who will be teaching Christmas ornaments for the Annual Christmas in July Ornament Classes. This is such a fun time for everyone and we can't do all of the ornaments in one day so we will do this for two months. Check the schedule to your left. There is no fee for these classes, just a small amount to cover the cost of supplies from the teachers. We invite any member of the chapter to teach.

I would also ask that members become a follower of the blog so you can get an automatic update by email. Simply click on the "Follow" button, follow the prompts and you will show up as a follower. Right now I don't believe we have anyone in the chapter as a follower.

April Meeting and Paint In

Not a big meeting this month, many were unable to attend and we still have several members on the mend. The ones that did come enjoyed painting on Tyvek paper. And, of course, everyone's painting came out pretty. Thanks, Mary, for teaching this class. Next month Pat Hutchins will bring in all the supplies to paint or stamp greeting cards for the troops in Iraq.

Already one fourth of the year has passed us by. We still have a lot of items to discuss so please try to attend the May meeting. Some things we need to finalize -
1. Are we going to host the booth at Wright Street Methodist Church?
2. Are we going to have a community raffle and if so what will we raffle?
3. What seminars are we planning to host this year and next year?

These are items that need to be discussed and settled. So come prepared, if you have suggestions please feel free to voice them. We need input from everyone. I will post more towards the end of the month.

Majestic Mountains on Tyvek Paper with Mary Brockett

It is always great to get new members in our club but it is even better when they volunteer to teach at the next meeting. Mary will be teaching an acrylic painting on Tyvek paper. She will provide the supplies and your cost will be $10. Don't forget to bring your regular painting supplies and something for our pot luck lunch. Our meeting will start at 10 am and we will start painting right after.

March Meeting-Membership Appreciation

Our Membership Appreciation Paint In will be held 6 March at 10 am in the Azalea Room at Baptist Medical Park. Please bring with you your regular painting supplies (white graphite) to include a large brush for background coverage, a liner, a flat or angular shader (3/8 inch) or number 12, a fan brush if you have one or an old scruffy brush. I will provide the paints needed. You will need to bring a surface to paint on approximately 7" wide by 17" long. Hobby Lobby and Michaels have several long routed boards in their wood department. You can go as wide as 8" and as short at 16". It doesn't have to be exact. There is no fee for this class for members (non-members will have to pay $15). It is one way the Board can say thanks to all of you who have stayed with us over the years.

I did not order the thermometer since I didn't get a definite from the membership as to how many wanted them. We will paint after our regular meeting.

As you all know, Fran had open heart surgery and is home doing much better. She hopes to attend the meeting.

The ladies at the Azalea City Decorative Artists would like to give our members first chance at purchasing the remaining videos in their library. As you know, ACDA gave up their charter the end of last year but they still have a few things to disburse. They have a large library of books and videos. Margaret will bring in the videos to the March meeting to sell and will bring in the books at a later date. Some of the videos can no longer be purchased and some do not have patterns or instructions. So, bring in a bit of extra cash and help the club earn a few dollars.

Painting with Ros

Our seminar was great this past weekend. We spent two days painting flowers - and everyone seemed so pleased with their projects. It is so much fun to see the many different surfaces we painted on. Ros brought her projector and with the screen that came out of the ceiling, there wasn't a bad seat in the house. Thanks to all the ladies who brought in lunch both days. It was delicious as always. And a big thank you to the ladies from South Florida, Indiana, and Alabama who came such a long way to paint with us. We really appreciate your visit and hope you can come back again.

I also want to thank Linda and Jane T. for coming out in that awful rainy and windy weather Friday night to help set up the room and for those who stayed behind on Sunday to reset and clean up. We missed the ones unable to attend.

As most of you know by now, Francis is in the hospital in Fairhope after undergoing open heart surgery. She had a triple bypass on Friday and as of today, she is still in intensive care. I spoke with Drudy and she will keep up updated on Francis' condition. Please keep her in your prayers.

I also spoke with Sherry. She started her radiation treatment last Tuesday and is doing well considering she is very tired and weak. She was unable to attend the class this weekend. Also keep her in your prayers.

THE MEETING SCHEDULED THIS WEEKEND HAS BEEN CANCELLED. WE WILL MEET AGAIN ON 6 MARCH FOR OUR MEMBERSHIP APPRECIATION. THE BLOG WILL BE UPDATED PRIOR TO THAT TIME.

Painting with Ros Stallcup

We have a full class for the Ros Stallcup seminar. We plan on starting promptly at 9 am. The doors will be open at 8 am for those wanting to come in early to set up and there will be some breakfast foods and coffee available about 8:30 am. For those of you coming in from out of town, we have a Hardee's right across the street from the Baptist Medical Center. Please call me if you have any problems finding the place or if you need directions (Brenda - 850-969-9524 or 982-9524). Ros will be sending six sets of paints to be shared with 27 people. For me, I find it distracting to have to ask for the paint to be passed so I plan to bring my own. Feel free to do the same.

Ros will have patterns available before class and she always allows enough time to put your pattern on and will help with adjustments if needed.

A word about Sherry....

I just received an email from Sherry saying she was home and wanted to thank everyone for their prayers these past few weeks. She has had the lump in her breast removed and several lymph nodes. The doctors feel they were able to get all the cancer out and did not find any in her lymph nodes - yippee!! She wanted to tell everyone - "If you ever find even a tiny little suspicious spot/lump in your breast, DO NOT DELAY and put off seeing your doctor immediately. I know, and my surgeon said, that is the only thing that kept the carcinoma spreading to the lymph nodes as it was the invading/infiltrating carcinoma and we got it early." She hopes to be able to come to the meeting on Saturday. She has an appointment with the Oncologist Friday and he will then tell her what line of treatment to expect. Please keep her in your prayers.

We couldn't wait any longer. We asked Joann Ford, a fellow vendor at the Wright Street Methodist Church to pull a name for the Santa raffle and the winner is - drum roll please - Sherry Mize!! No one was more surprised than Sherry that she won. She said she never wins anything so this was a good one for her. We are all very happy for you, Sherry. A big Thank You to all the members who went about selling those raffle tickets - a total of 238 tickets were sold.

The Craft show went well also. We set up Friday morning - no small feat since we are all getting older and slower but we did it on our own. The show started at 1 pm on Friday and we did really well the first day. Then on Saturday we managed to do as well even though we were threatened with rain all day. Luckily, it held off until we were packed up and ready to go home. We received a lot of nice compliments from customers and we had such a wide selection - happy snowmen, cute Santas, decourpage boxes, scrapbook items, angels, stars, Santas and snowmen painted on just about anything and everything. The large tree we were able to get this year helped in showing off our ornaments. There was no shortage of volunteers to man the booth and of all the booths there we had the most variety of items and I think we did the best in sales also. Our chapter owes a big Thank You to Francis, Sherry, Julia, Janice, Jane T, Crystal, Barbara, Sue, Lucy, and Brenda for putting this together for the chapter. Also, to Pat for donating some of her ornaments.

ROS STALLCUP SEMINAR IN JANUARY 2010

We have selected the pictures of what Ros will be teaching at the seminar in January 2010. For members, sign up now, for non-members, we will start accepting reservations on 1 November. We already have several out of town members who are on the list for this seminar. For those of you who have not painted with Ros, she is great fun. She is a very loose painter but you will enjoy her techniques. This seminar will be on 30-31 January at the Baptist Medical Center on University Parkway starting at 9 am. For the out of towners who have not painted with us before - we paint in a large room with great lighting, tables are 30"x60" with two painters to a table, plenty of room, no one is squashed together. We have a long buffet table for our lunch and extra tables in the back of room so you do not have to eat where you paint. We have a sink in the room, coffee pots in the room, two restrooms right outside the entrance door, a security guard on duty (we are usually the only ones in the building), lots of paved parking, a vending area, and a shaded area outside for those who smoke. We are within 5 minutes to the local hotels, Target, Ross, and Kohl's. The interstate exit is about 7 minutes from the BMC. If you would like to stay with one of our members instead of a hotel, please let me know once you have signed up and I will see what we can do on this end for you. Santa for Raffle

This wonderful handmade Santa will be raffled off between now and November 21. The proceeds from this raffle will be used to fund seminars and classes for our chapter. Raffle tickets are $1.00 each. His face is handpainted and he sports a pair of glasses. His coat is a beautiful jacquard fabric of red with gold threading. His hair and beard is made from mohair and his fur is real mink. He is weighted to sit on a table or chair. He is about 25 inches long (body length is 15 inches). Members will receive tickets and photos in their next newsletter. We ask our members to make every effort to find a new home for this little guy. We will have the drawing at 4 pm on 21 November after the Wright Street Methodist Church Christmas Creations Art/Craft Show.

Ros Stallcup - yippee. I have taken from Ros several times and truly enjoyed the experience. I am sure you all know who she is - she has authored more than 18 books - Gran's Garden. We have yet to select the photos because we just completed the booking transaction but I will post them as soon as they arrive. The dates are 30-31 January 2010. Seats are limited and we will open registration to non-members after 1 October. So, you know what that means, register now to ensure you have a seat in this seminar. We have already received interest from several out of town painters. If any one of you would like to offer our out of town guests a place to stay during this seminar, please let me know so I can coordinate with Linda. This will be the first seminar of the year and Linda is checking on several others - one being Margot Clark, possibly Jeanne Downing, or Connie Parkinson. If you have a particular artist in mind that you would like to have a seminar with, please let us know. Linda makes every effort to bring in artist that are a little different and will offer something new for you to try whether it is acrylic, oil, or watercolor.

September Paint In

Actually it is going to be 29 August due to the holiday weekend but we will still be meeting and painting. I will be teaching an ornament that I know you will enjoy painting. I wasn't able to put together a project with everything going on at home (Allen was hospitalized with a collapsed heart valve) but I will be able to do the little ornament. I have completed the newsletter and it has been sent out but you may not get it before the meeting. So, bring your regular painting supplies and I will furnish the paint, pattern, photo, and surface. Cost will only be $3.00, the class fee for the club and the cost of the surface. Lunch will be pot luck. We will start at our normal time of 10 am. There are several things on the agenda we need to discuss during the meeting, i.e., craft show, Peggy Harris, quilt raffle for next year and the new board. Painting with ACDA

Our chapter hosted the second part of our ornament paint in last Saturday. Unfortunately, I was not able to participate but I understand everyone had a great time and we had members teaching that had not taught before. On 15 August, the Azalea City Decorative Artists will host the second part of their ornament paint in. While I do not know what everyone is teaching, I am going to teach a Santa on a 6" clothespin. Too big to put on the tree but they are really cute to clip Christmas cards to. Hope you can join us - if you want to ride with me, call or email me and we can carpool.

Hope all of you can make the Christmas Ornament Paint In on 1 August. This is our usual meeting date but we will be painting the ornaments instead. I won't have time to do a newsletter this month so suffice it to say this is the only info I can get out to you before the meeting. Please pass it on to others if they do not have email.

I am back from the Houston Art Expo and it was a nice trip over - we followed Lucy right into Houston. The show was not as big as National, of course, but just as much fun. We saw all the usual "Big Brushes", Priscilla Hauser, Delane Lange, Peggy Harris, Tom Jones (the painter, not the singer - however, I would have been more excited to see the singer), Ginger Edwards, Janelle Johnson, Pat Lentine, and many more. I took only three classes (signed up for four but was bumped from the Delane Lange class - too many people, not enough surfaces - a long story). I painted calla lilies and a gold fish. The gold fish was painted a bit unusual but I know you are all going to love painting it in November with Peggy. I wish you could have seen the paintings in the auction - they were all beautiful. We went to a bar-b-cue (I am not a fan of bar-b-cue) and the food was delicous. And, of course, you know the best part was the sales floor. I didn't see anything new to report to you, mostly the regular things - lots of brushes and packets, a whole lot of wood items, new painting totes, painting with texture paste (I may demo this in the next few months), fabric painting and some products like Magic Mix that we have not used before. I think they had close to 500 attendees and since most were in classes when the sales floor was open, sometimes you almost had the place to yourself.

Although I knew we were going to Texas, I did not expect to find so many people from foreign countries working at the hotel. We had Luke from the Congo for our porter, Simon from Ethiopia was our shuttle driver (he has sinced learned what "Scatch Off" means), Omar from Russia was our TV repairman, Sandy from the Philippines was our plumber (no, we did not stop up the toilet or the tub - the tub didn't drain properly), Juan from Mexico was the air conditioning man, and we had someone from the Checkz Republic to help with the fridge but I don't remember his name but when he brought the fridge to our room he took one look and said "I had better get a bigger fridge", and then there was Lorraine from the east Indies as our waitress!!! We got to know all of them and I think we were a bunch of crazy old ladies to them.

I had some uplifting moments like when Fran and I were in the elevator with a woman in one of those motorized vehicles. That thing takes up a lot of space but we managed to get her in and then out. I helped her with her painting tote so she could haul tail down the long corridor with her painting tote pulled behind her. I got back in the elevator and just walked out of it on our floor leaving my painting tote in the corner of the elevator. Of course, when I realized I didn't have it in the room, I went racing out trying to find it on one of the five elevators. First, I tried the one we came up in but everytime I pushed the down button a different elevator door opened. Finally, I took one down and asked the front desk if a tote had been turned in. No - it was't there and I am almost in tears. So, I stood by the elevators running from one to the other pushing the down button and then pressing any floor number to get the elevators to go up so I could check the one we were in. I noticed several odd looks from some of the people in the lobby - but you know how possesive painters are about their supplies and I just knew my tote was still in that elevator. After about 7-8 times the elevator I wanted opened but no tote. I started thinking about all my valuables in my tote - my palette knife I have had for 23 years (given to me by Priscilla Hauser), my stylus from when I first started painting, my clip board I just recently finished, and Lord have mercy, my 1" square box of blush powder and my Krylon 18K gold pen - things I just can't live without. I went back to my room to just sit down and perhaps have a good cry but the ladies (Fran, Debbie, and Tracy) said let's go down and try again. Feeling a bit desperate, I told the desk clerk who I was and what I had lost - and thank the Good Paint Fairy - someone had turned it in. I guess it goes to show we have some wonderful honest people out there - or someone took a peek into the tote and saw the big mess and figured it wasn't something they needed (they didn't see the hundred dollars I kept hidden for the just in case - and it has since been removed). Whatever the reason, I am so happy to have it back. I am a firm believer that when you do good it always comes back to you.

That is it for my trip - I will let the others fill you in on what all they did and I will be posting pics as soon as I unpack everything.

Please come Saturday prepared with a variety of painting brushes (especially smaller ones) and your regular paint supplies. Each teacher will provide a surface, pattern, photo, etc. for the usual packet fees. Most do not go over two dollars. Christmas in July Ornament Paint In

Our Annual Christmas In July Ornament Paint In was held 27 June and as usual, we had a really great time thanks to Julia, Linda, Joan and Brenda. We painted Santas on a sled, Snowman on a star, a Santa on a wooden fork, and we made a moose pin/magnet. Unfortunately, we ran out of time but will host our second paint in 1 August. The attached slideshow shows everyone concentrating on their painting - and a few just talking.

We will have our Annual Ornament Paint-In this Saturday, 27 June at 10 am. Please bring your regular painting supplies and a covered dish to share. The teachers will provide a surface to paint on, paints, pattern, photo and instructions. Teachers for June will be Linda, Brenda, Jane T., and Julia and possibly Joan Scheet. Cost will be for the packets only (about $2 each) as the teachers have generously waived their teaching fees for the paint-in. Brenda will teach the Santa on a 3"x12" wood sled. Julia will teach a Santa on a 3"x10" wood fork. Linda, Jane, and Joan will surprise us with their projects. If you want to teach a project, there is still time. Peggy Harris Seminar

Who wouldn't want to paint with Peggy? Not many, I am sure. Our chapter hosted Peggy in 2007 and loved her so much we asked that she come back again. Peggy is renowned for her cute animals and she makes painting so much fun. She is so enthusiastic about painting and you can tell she loves what she is doing. She will be here 7 November 2009 and will be teaching "Plain and Fancy" - the prettiest fancy tail goldfish on a surface of your choice. She will teach a pretty water lilly and green frogs on Sunday, 8 November. Seats are limited so make your reservation now. The registration will open to all other chapters and non-members after 1 July 2009. Azalea City Decorative Artists
We will be painting "Bugs" with Janice this month in Bay Minette, 20 June at 10 am. Bring your own surface (no fabric), something like a flower pot or a metal pot would be nice. These are simple little projects and there are several bugs that are not on the photo that will be included in the project. Janice will provide a packet with instructions, patterns, etc., and the paints will be shared. As always, bring your regular painting supplies to include several small brushes and something to share at lunch. Painting Apples with Julia

Julia will be teaching this beautiful fruit tray at the next Sea Oats meeting, 6 June at 10 am. Bring a surface of your choice, basecoat it with Black or Black Green, the size of the surface should be at least 10"x13". Hobby Lobby has 30% off all unfinished wood this week (get coupon online), you should be able to find something nice there or at Michael's (coupon 40% off in paper) or at Joann's Fabrics (40% off coupon in paper). Julia painted this on a wood tray. If you are using unfinished wood, basecoat it with a 1:1 ratio of Black Green and wood sealer. This will take at least 2 coats, sanding in between coats (use brown paper bag or a fine grit sandpaper). If you need any further instructions, email me at angelbrush1@yahoo.com.

ACDA
Julia will be teaching an ear of corn rolling pin at the next ACDA meeting on 16 May at 10 am. She will provide paint, pattern, instructions, and photo. You will need to bring your regular painting supplies and a surface to paint on. Cost will be $10 per person. Rolling pins can be purchased at Winn Dixie or Walmart or bring a surface of choice. If you don't want to ride by yourself, check with other members and share a ride.

Vicki and Julia August 2008

One of our members, Vicki Saeger, passed away yesterday. Vicki had only been with us a short time before finding out she had Lou Gherigs disease. But she came to the meetings and the seminars as often as she could. One of her great loves was painting Santas, which she had her own vision as to what they should look like and she was not persuaded to paint any differently. Even her Artist Trading Card had a Santa painted on it. We are going to miss her.

Our class with Jill MacFarland was great. We painted angels and mermaids and everyone was so happy with their pieces. We talked as much as we painted and we laughed even more. We seem to have a very happy chapter. Jill was wonderful and we all learned a few new techniques. I posted my mermaid and several of my net friends said that Jill's mermaid looked more innocent than mine. As I posted on my blog, it was hard to paint mine any different with the rap song "I like big butts" running through my head. So mine has an ample fanny but that's OK, I like her anyway. Now I am off to work on finishing my angel. Hope to see some of you at the Mary Wiseman seminar in Mobile.

Jill MacFarland Seminar UPDATE

Some of you wanted to know the size of the projects we are painting. According to Jill the mermaid is on a round 12-13" surface - the angel is on a heart that measures 11" across at the widest point and from the center of the heart to the bottom point it measures 10 1/2". Of course, if you have a surface that is not round or bigger than those above, don't worry, you can adjust your pattern.

We still have a few openings for the Jill MacFarland Seminar scheduled next month - 4-5 April 2009. We have opened up the spaces to other chapters in our area so we hope to see a few new faces there. Please check the post below for the photos. I believe the Angel will be painted on Saturday and the Mermaid on Sunday. You can paint it on the surface of your choice. Our next meeting will be held at 10 am on 7 March 2009 at the Baptist Medical Park. A former member of our chapter will be coming in at 9 am with a lot of her wood and painting supplies that she would like to sell. She has returned to her first love, beading, and no longer needs the painting items. If you are interested, come early. Once the meeting starts the Trading Post will be closed.

Janice will be teaching a small flower pot after the meeting. Just bring your regular painting supplies, she will furnish the pot, instructions, and paint. If you have not signed up for the Jill MacFarland seminar you still have another chance at the meeting. The projects are shown below.

Margaret will be here with the project photos for the Mary Wiseman seminar to be held 25-26 April in Mobile. The cost is $35 a day. As soon as I get a copy of the photos I will post here. Hope to see yall Saturday.

Jill Jill MacFarland Seminar 4-5 April 2009

I have had a lot of interest in the Jill MacFarland seminar scheduled 4-5 April 2009. We still have openings so if you want to register for this weekend class email me at angelbrush1@yahoo.com. The cost will be $65 for the weekend (the price is the same for one or two days). As always we will have a potluck lunch and on Saturday night we will take Jill to dinner and everyone is welcomed to attend. If you are coming from out of town and need information about the hotels or the Naval Base Lodging, email me and I will get that to you. I will also add the info to this blog. Linda is still working on what surfaces we will paint on, sizes, etc. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful facility to paint in with great lighting, comfortable chairs and plenty of space. It is within a mile of the interstate and can be found without much difficulty. Once you have signed up you will receive maps and any other pertinent information. Jill McFarlane Seminar

Now is the time to make your reservations for the Jill McFarlane seminar being held on 4-5 April 2009. We have a limited number of seats available and we have now opened this seminar to other clubs. The cost will be $65 for the weekend, whether you are taking one day or both. Lunch is pot luck and several of our members have opened their home to out of town visitors. The Angel will be taught on Saturday and the Mermaid will be taught on Sunday. Some of you have hesitated because of the Mermaid being a bit provocative. Wright Street Art/Craft Show

The show was very successful this weekend, I had forgotten how much work was involved in setting up and taking down. Thanks to the ladies who participated and worked the show, Francis, Sherry, Jane T., Jane F., Sue, Susan, Lucy, Julia, Joan (and myself). Everyone brought in a bit of everything and everything a bit different. It seems the ornaments were the thing to buy this year. Everyone seemed to enjoy it so much there are talks of doing it again next year. Sue brought the cutest cinnamon stick snowmen, Lucy her Triangle Santas, Susan brought the prettiest paper mache gourds, Sherry painted the sweetest acorn necklaces, Jane F. painted a fun Santa choo-choo domino necklace, Francis brought a Ho Ho Ho Mrs. Claus dress painted on an ornament, Joan brought Mr. and Mrs. Claus ceramics and ornaments, Julia sent the red hat lady ornaments, and I painted Santas and Snowmen on everything. Thanks also to Linda for donating the magnolia angels and to Margaret for the ornaments she donated. (I did not tell you everything that was in the booth, only a small portion). Your participation and support is so appreciated by the members but we can't stop here, we have to come up with ways to bring in funds for next year. So put your thinking caps on and let's see what fun things we can do next year to raise funds to bring in our National "Big Brushes".

Are you ready for the Art Show???

The Wright Street Methodist Church Christmas Creations Art/Craft Show will be on 14-15 November 2008. Because we decided to forego the Annual Auction for the Art show, this will be our only fund raiser for the year. Our chapter will have a booth displaying hand painted items (boxes, plaques, jewelry, ornaments, and much more) from our members. If you are unable to participate, please support our chapter by visiting our booth and purchasing a few really cute ornaments. There will be a variety of items to choose from so I am sure there will be something for everyone. I will update you on times and where we will be located. For those participating, I will post the chapter's rules and requirements in the newsletter.

Janice Smith will be teaching the cutest Gingerbread ornament at the meeting in November. She will furnish instructions, wood surface, photo pattern for $15. We will also finalize our plans for the Wright Street Methodist Church Christmas Creations Art/Craft Show scheduled for 14-15 November 2008. Those who are participating should be prepared to pay their fee at the meeting.

We are also going to nominate our new Board. We have had no volunteers to come forward so there is a good possibility that the Board will remain the same.
